About this Activity
Join us for the fourth webinar in our series, where we turn the spotlight on a subspecialty that is transforming outcomes for children worldwide: Paediatric Interventional Radiology (Paeds IR).
Paeds IR uses minimally invasive, image-guided techniques to diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions in children—often avoiding the need for open surgery. While it is well established in centres overseas, it is still an emerging field in South Africa, making this a particularly timely and important conversation.
In this session, Dr Gary Peiser, Paediatric Interventional Radiologist based in Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital in Johannesburg, will guide us through “A Day in the Life of a Paediatric Interventional Radiologist”.
Drawing on real-world cases, he’ll showcase the procedures that define his daily practice—ranging from vascular access (such as PICC lines) and neuroblastoma biopsies, to bone tumour ablations, biliary interventions, portovenograms for Rex bypass, lymphangiography, thoracic duct embolisation, and sclerotherapy for venous and lymphatic malformations.
This promises to be a rare and insightful journey into a field that is not only technically demanding but also profoundly life-changing for young patients and their families.
What You Will Learn
In this one-hour webinar, Dr Gary Peiser will explore the critical role of Interventional Radiology (IR) in paediatrics including:
1. What is Paediatric IR
- Gain an understanding of the field and it's emerging potential
2. Safe Venous Access in Children
- Techniques for PICC line insertion in extremely low birthweight neonates
- Placement of chemotherapy ports and dialysis catheters
3. Biopsies in Paediatric Patients
- Safety considerations when biopsying small bodies
- Applications: liver biopsies in liver failure (transplant work-up), renal biopsies for glomerulonephritis, and bone biopsies for tumours.
4. The Role of Paediatric IR in Transplant Surgery
- Supporting surgical planning.
- Managing post-transplant complications.
5. Vascular Anomalies and Sclerotherapy
- Introduction to vascular anomalies in children (venous and lymphatic malformations).
- Image-guided treatment options with sclerotherapy
Through real-world cases and expert insight, participants will gain practical knowledge of minimally invasive procedures that are transforming outcomes for this most vulnerable population group.

About Your Presenter
Dr Gary Peiser is South Africa’s first - and currently only - qualified paediatric interventional radiologist. He earned his MBChB from UCT and his MMed in Diagnostic Radiology from Wits University. In 2021, he recieved his Radiology Degree from the College of Diagnostic Radiologists (FC Rad Diag SA).
He was accepted into the fellowship program at SickKids Hospital in Toronto, Canada, where he specialised in Paediatric Interventional Radiology. During his fellowship, he recieved additional training in sclerotherapy for vascular malformations.
Now at Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital in Johannesbur,g he leads its Interventional Radiology service. In addition to this role, he is the Administrator of the Wits University Radiology program.
His vision is to provide world-class paediatric radiology services in South Africa.
About Your Host
Dr Dale Creamer is Head of Interventional Radiology at Groote Schuur Hospital, a senior lecturer at the University of Cape Town (UCT), and currently practices at UCT Private Academic Hospital.
He earned his MBChB from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and completed his MMed in Diagnostic Radiology at Stellenbosch University. In 2021, he was awarded the Fellowship of the College of Diagnostic Radiologists (FC Rad Diag). He then received a Fellowship in Interventional Radiology from the University of Calgary in 2022, during which he developed a special interest in women’s health.
Driven to advance the field locally, he is committed to establishing a sub-specialist training programme in Interventional Radiology in South Africa.
