What you will learn

Interventional Radiology (IR) in oncology is transforming cancer care. While many clinicians are aware of IR, fewer realise just how effective it can be—and how many new options it offers for patient-centred care. From diagnosis to treatment and palliation, IR expands the therapeutic toolbox.  As IR becomes more integrated into cancer care, clinicians need to understand which patients may benefit and how to effectively incorporate these targeted treatments into multidisciplinary plans for personalised, precision-based oncology care.

In this module, Dr Gareth Bydawell will introduce the IR subspecialty focused on oncology, exploring how Interventional Oncology (IO) is increasingly integrated into cancer patient care and discussing future trends in the field.

He will examine the crucial role of multidisciplinary teams in oncology decision-making, highlighting how precision treatments depend on customised care across various specialities.

Gareth will also discuss new technologies, such as image navigation, molecular imaging, robotics, and AI, enhancing IO procedures. Key treatments available in South African healthcare will be reviewed, including image-guided ablation, arterial treatments like TACE and SIRT, and palliative care interventions for pain management.

Through case studies, participants will learn how these techniques are applied and how they expand treatment options for cancer patients, improving outcomes and quality of life.

What you will learn

Gareth and Dale will explore the expanding role of Interventional Radiology (IR) in multidisciplinary care for urology patients, focusing on how IR is revolutionising the treatment of men's health issues. They will highlight the advantages of IR, including its ability to offer outpatient procedures, shorter recovery times, and reduced complication rates.

The session will examine a range of key interventional radiology (IR) techniques, including Prostatic Artery Embolisation (PAE) for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), varicocele embolisation for male infertility and pain management, and penile revascularisation for vascular erectile dysfunction (ED).

They will discuss the emerging role of IR in these conditions, comparing its effectiveness with traditional surgical options, while also addressing the local healthcare context in South Africa.

Additionally, the module will provide insights into how urology practices can access these services and build referral networks to ensure patients receive the most effective treatments available.

What you will learn

Hepatobiliary interventions in Interventional Radiology (IR) provide minimally invasive treatments for liver and biliary conditions, which are often difficult to treat with limited therapeutic options available to practitioners. This module examines the increasing role of IR in managing complex hepatobiliary diseases, providing expanded treatment options for patients.

Professor Sanyika will review key procedures, including percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage (PTBD) for bile duct obstructions, transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) for portal hypertension, and image-guided ablation techniques such as radiofrequency and microwave ablation for liver tumours.

He will discuss the benefits of these therapies, including shorter recovery times and reduced complications. This module will also help you identify suitable patients for these procedures and guide you through the referral processes.

Dr Gary Peiser

Paediatric Interventional Radiology (IR) is an emerging, high-impact subspecialty that uses image-guided, minimally invasive procedures to diagnose and treat complex conditions in children. From establishing safe vascular access in neonates to performing targeted biopsies and managing vascular anomalies, interventional radiology (IR) reduces the need for open surgery, lowers complication rates, and shortens recovery times.

Whilst still an emerging speciality in South Africa, there is no doubt that, as the country begins to grow local expertise in this area, understanding the scope and safety of paediatric IR is essential for clinicians dedicated to delivering cutting-edge, compassionate care to these most vulnerable of patients.

What you will learn

Gary will explore key aspects of Interventional Radiology (IR) in paediatric care, focusing on the safety and precision required for neonates and children.

He will discuss venous access techniques, including PICC line placement for low birth weight babies, as well as the insertion of chemotherapy ports and dialysis catheters in young patients. Gary will also cover biopsy procedures for liver, renal, and bone tissues, highlighting the specific risks and safety considerations for paediatric patients.

Additionally, he will examine the role of IR in transplant surgery, from planning to complication management, and delve into vascular anomalies, such as venous and lymphatic malformations, with a focus on sclerotherapy treatment options.

What you will learn

Interventional Radiology (IR) is playing an increasingly pivotal role in women’s health by offering minimally invasive treatments for conditions that traditionally required surgery. These procedures often avoid the need for hospitalisation or general anaesthesia, allowing patients to resume normal activities with minimal recovery time.

In this module, Dale Creamer will explore key IR procedures, including endometrial ablation for treating abnormal uterine bleeding and uterine fibroid embolisation for fibroids, both of which offer alternatives to more invasive surgeries, such as hysterectomy.

Additionally, he’ll take a closer look at the critical role IR plays in managing postpartum haemorrhage, providing effective solutions without major surgery.

Through case studies, the module will examine the implications of these interventions, focusing on improved recovery times, fertility preservation, and enhanced quality of life for women. Participants will gain insights into identifying suitable candidates for these procedures, understanding the referral process, and the growing impact of IR in women’s health.
