National Shortage of Verorab™ Rabies Vaccine: Chirorab® Now Available as an Alternative Boost

The National Department of Health (NDoH) has confirmed a current shortage of the Verorab™ rabies vaccine in South Africa. In response, Chirorab® has been identified as a clinically appropriate alternative. From January 2025, the Department has secured stock of Chirorab® through Kahma Biotech (Pty Ltd).

Healthcare professionals are advised that the dosing schedule for Chirorab® remains consistent with existing national and World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for both pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis. While the volume per vial differs between Chirorab® and Verorab™, each vial of Chirorab® still constitutes a single intramuscular dose.

Public-sector healthcare facilities requiring a supply of Chirorab® should contact their relevant provincial pharmacy depots for procurement. Providers in the private sector are encouraged to follow procurement protocols as per their internal organisational procedures.
