Source: DoH Press Release 13 May 2024
Minister of Health Dr Joe Phaahla has urged caution amid a confirmed case of Monkey Pox (Mpox).
The case was confirmed in a 35-year-old male from Gauteng, South Africa, on May 9th, 2024. The patient had no recent travel history, suggesting local transmission.
South African health departments are managing the situation, including contact tracing. An outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) features a highly virulent MPXV clade I, with a new, more transmissible variant "clade 1b" raising pandemic concerns.
Vigilance, isolation, and contact tracing are crucial, while mass vaccination isn't recommended.
