About This Webinar

Interventional Radiology at the Nexus of Liver Cancer and Emergency Hepatobiliary Care explores the expanding role of IR in both oncologic and non-oncologic hepatobiliary (HPB) care — especially in high-risk patients where surgery may not be viable. Led by Professor Charles Sanyika and hosted by Dr Dale Creamer, this in-depth clinical discussion covers transarterial therapies in hepatocellular carcinoma, emergency interventions for gastrointestinal bleeding, and the role of IR as a life-saving alternative in critically ill patients.

This is precision medicine in action. The session draws on real-world cases and current evidence to equip practitioners with a deeper understanding of when and how to refer patients for IR, how these procedures integrate into multidisciplinary HPB management, and what outcomes they can expect. A must-watch for any clinician managing complex liver disease or oncology patients.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand patient selection for TACE and TARE in hepatocellular carcinoma, including BCLC staging, liver function status, and portal vein considerations.
  • Review procedural techniques for TACE (chemotherapy with embolisation) and TARE/Y-90 (targeted internal radiotherapy), including clinical goals such as tumour control, downstaging, and bridging to transplant.
  • Explore embolisation techniques for visceral aneurysms and management of variceal bleeding in portal hypertension, including TIPS creation.
  • Understand the value of IR as a minimally invasive solution in critically ill patients where surgery is not an option, across oncology, vascular, and emergency care.
  • Identify how IR contributes to improved patient outcomes, reduced hospital stays, and expanded treatment pathways in high-risk HPB cases.
