About This Webinar

Paediatric Interventional Radiology uses minimally invasive, image-guided techniques to diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions in children — often avoiding the need for open surgery. While well established in centres overseas, it is still an emerging field in South Africa, making this a particularly timely and important conversation.

In this session, Dr Gary Peiser — South Africa's first and currently only qualified Paediatric Interventional Radiologist, based at Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital in Johannesburg — guides us through a Day in the Life of a Paediatric IR specialist. Drawing on real-world cases, he showcases procedures from vascular access and neuroblastoma biopsies to bone tumour ablations, biliary interventions, and sclerotherapy for vascular malformations.

Learning Objectives

  • Gain an understanding of the field of Paediatric Interventional Radiology and its emerging potential in South Africa.
  • Understand safe venous access techniques in children, including PICC line insertion in extremely low birthweight neonates and placement of chemotherapy ports and dialysis catheters.
  • Explore safety considerations and applications of biopsies in paediatric patients, including liver, renal, and bone biopsies.
  • Understand the role of Paediatric IR in transplant surgery, including supporting surgical planning and managing post-transplant complications.
  • Gain practical knowledge of image-guided treatment options for vascular anomalies in children, including venous and lymphatic malformations.

Dr Gary Peiser is South Africa's first and currently only qualified Paediatric Interventional Radiologist, based at the Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital in Johannesburg. He pioneered minimally invasive, image-guided procedures for paediatric patients across a wide range of conditions. Dr Peiser trained in paediatric IR internationally before returning to South Africa to establish this subspecialty locally. His work spans vascular access, tumour ablation, biliary interventions, and sclerotherapy for vascular malformations — transforming outcomes for children who previously had no minimally invasive alternative.
