About this Series

Organ transplantation remains one of the most significant and life-altering interventions in modern medicine — yet behind every successful transplant lies a complex web of clinical decision-making, ethical tension, system-level constraints, and deeply human stories.

This August, The Medical Education Network presents an innovative, accredited three-part series designed to enhance your knowledge, challenge your assumptions, and deepen your understanding of why organ donation is no longer at the margins — it’s rapidly becoming central to modern medical practice.

Presented as part of Organ Donor Awareness Month, we invite specialist practitioners to engage in a meaningful, case-informed exploration of organ donation and transplantation within the South African context.

In each of our focused sessions, we will challenge assumptions, deconstruct data, and shine a light on often-overlooked patient populations — including children — whose access to transplant services remains limited, and whose clinical outcomes demand closer attention.

Far from a procedural or technical conversation alone, this series interrogates the broader questions that confront us as clinicians:
How do we reconcile scarcity with need
What are the ethical implications of current waiting list systems
How do social determinants of health and systemic inequities affect transplant access and outcomes
And critically, what role can each of us play in raising awareness and improving pathways to care

Each session features expert clinicians, researchers, and transplant leaders, offering both scientific rigour and lived experience.

Together, we aim to deepen clinical understanding, confront practical and moral complexities, and ultimately advocate for more equitable, effective transplantation systems in South Africa.

This is not just a conversation about organs —
It’s a conversation about the patient realities that define your practice

Whether you work in transplant medicine or are simply curious, join us this August as we bring together clinical insight, ethical reflection, and surgical innovation.
