UNICEF has issued an emergency tender to procure mpox vaccines in response to a declared public health emergency by the Africa CDC and WHO. This initiative aims to address the urgent need for vaccines in the hardest-hit countries, particularly the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which has reported over 18,000 suspected cases and 629 deaths this year, mostly among children.

The tender is part of a collaborative effort involving Africa CDC, Gavi, WHO, the Pan American Health Organization, and other partners to increase vaccine access and facilitate donations from high-income countries. UNICEF will establish conditional supply agreements with vaccine manufacturers to expedite procurement and distribution, contingent on secured financing, confirmed demand, and regulatory approvals. WHO is expected to complete its review of vaccine information by mid-September.

The emergency response includes securing up to 12 million vaccine doses through 2025, expanding production, and addressing the immediate vaccine shortage. Alongside vaccination efforts, UNICEF and partners are focusing on infection prevention, control measures, and providing medical supplies. The goal is a coordinated and equitable response to control the mpox outbreak and protect vulnerable populations.
