Virtual Reality is the buzz word of the moment in healthcare. If you are like us, you might have been left wondering how practically this new wave of healthcare innovation will impact you  in your everyday practice.

Recently we’ve been researching  EchoPixel  a start-up out of Los Altos Hills, California, who are now applying this technology to the world of medical imaging and look set to revolutionise how doctors view CT scans, MRI’s and ultrasounds.

Traditionally medical imagery is viewed in 2D which has its obvious limitations. And to be fair the current form of imagery has been around since the 80s.

Now equipped with a pair of 3D glasses and EchoPixel’s technology, practitioners will be able to virtually ‘examine’ the patient scans from any angle.
The internal organs literally lift off the screen in hologram format, allowing a much more in-depth exploration in 3D format. This ability, according to the company, is set to radically ‘improve healthcare while reducing time and costs for hospitals and patients.'

Sounds like a something out of a movie? Admittedly the accompanying video may make this technology look like something from a Hollywood Blockbuster, but the company has already got the go-ahead from the FDA, and raised $5.8 million in seed capital earlier this year.

And that's why this company is on the MedED team’s list of ‘Must Watch’ companies.
